Do Senatu trafiła uchwalona przez Sejm 9 maja 2014 roku ustawa o prawach konsumenta, która znacząco poszerza te prawa. Przewiduje m.in., że będziemy mieć 14 zamiast 10 dni na to, by bez podania przyczyny zwrócić towar kupiony na odległość - np. przez internet czy telefon. Nowa ustawa gwarantuje konsumentom otrzymywanie od przedsiębiorcy, przed zawarciem umowy, wyczerpujących informacji, istotnych w kontekście jej zawierania. Co ważne, uprawnienie do otrzymania informacji będzie przysługiwało konsumentowi nie tylko w odniesieniu do umów zawieranych poza lokalem przedsiębiorstwa oraz na odległość, ale również w odniesieniu do umów zawieranych w sposób tradycyjny – w sklepie. Umożliwi to konsumentowi bardziej świadome zawieranie umów.
Ustawa wprowadza również przepisy, które ułatwią konsumentowi zorientowanie się, jeszcze przed zawarciem umowy, jakie koszty rzeczywiście będzie musiał ponieść w związku z zawieraną umową. Przedsiębiorca będzie, bowiem zobowiązany do poinformowania konsumenta w jasny sposób o wszystkich kosztach wynikających z umowy.
Ustawa zabrania także pobierania od konsumentów zawyżonych opłat za korzystanie z infolinii udostępnianych przez przedsiębiorców na potrzeby kontaktowania się w sprawach związanych z zawartymi umowami. Ponadto, jeżeli kupimy produkt wadliwy, będziemy mogli od razu żądać obniżenia ceny lub zwrotu pieniędzy, bez konieczności uprzedniego oddania rzeczy do naprawy czy jej wymiany. Wprowadzenie tych zmian oznacza uchylenie przepisów o sprzedaży konsumenckiej i powrót do wcześniejszych rozwiązań. Eksperci wskazują, że dotychczasowe przepisy faworyzują pod tym względem kupujących, którzy są przedsiębiorcami. Jeżeli bowiem konsument oddaje towar do reklamacji, przedsiębiorca może odmówić zwrotu pieniędzy i zaoferować naprawę lub wymianę. Natomiast w przypadku gdy towar kupuje przedsiębiorca, to po jednokrotnej nieudanej naprawie lub wymianie może towar zwrócić i żądać oddania pieniędzy.
